He has an MBA from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Sloan School, an MSc from TU Vienna, and an MIM from WU Vienna and HEC Paris.

Mag. Markus Wanko
Following a fifteen-year career in investing and strategy consulting and upon returning to Austria, Markus joined IST Austria to start TWIST, IST’s tech transfer organisation, and has been driving the development of IST PARK, the technology park adjacent to IST Austria, and IST Cube, a science and tech-based seed fund. His background is in venture capital investing with Safeguard Scientifics and the European Investment Fund, strategy consulting with the Boston Consulting Group, and principal investment with QIA, one of the world’s largest sovereign wealth funds. He has supported a broad range of startups in the process, energy and tech industries.
Dr. Ingrid Kelly
Ingrid joined the IST Tech Transfer team in October 2018 after spending a number of years at the University of Vienna, where she was responsible for managing the life sciences technology portfolio and supporting spin-out companies. Ingrid worked as a patent attorney in and for the pharma industry for more than a decade in different countries before moving into technology transfer.
Ingrid holds a PhD in molecular biology from the University of Cambridge. She is a qualified European patent attorney with RTTP (registered technology transfer professional) certification.
Dr. Alexander Schwartz
Alexander joined IST Austria in 2018 as Partner. He has more than 15 years of experience in management consulting, eight of which with McKinsey & Company in Vienna and Chicago. His focus has been on strategy, innovation, and M&A in chemicals, materials, agriculture and life science related industries.
By education and heart Alexander is a scientist: He studied chemistry at TU Graz, ETH Zurich and the University of Vienna before moving on to become a postdoctoral fellow at Harvard University. From 2013-2015 he was a part time research fellow at IIASA (International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis), a leading European Thinktank.
Dipl.-Ing. Alexander Fischl
Alex joined IST Austria as a Tech Transfer Associate, focusing on intellectual property originating from IST’s Computer Science groups. After working for 8 years as a Senior Marketing and Product Manager within Austria’s B2B telco industry, he studied Business Informatics and founded his own IT consultancy. Through his consulting, he became deeply immersed in the local startup ecosystem, successfully acquiring numerous research and go-to market project grants for several of Austria’s top-ranked IT startups.
Alex holds a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Business Informatics from the Vienna University of Technology, as well as an Innovation diploma supplement from the Informatics Innovation Center (i2c).
Ms Elisabeth Daniels-Maly
Elisabeth supports Markus and the team in all administrative and organizational matters regarding TWIST, IST PARK and IST CUBE. She is an interface to the administration of IST Austria, and to external business partners.
She has many years of experience in administrative and organizational support, working in various departments of the Vienna University of Technology, before she joined IST Austria in 2014.
With a background in tourism, she manages daily matters efficiently and always remains service oriented.
Prof. Thomas Henzinger
Professor Thomas Henzinger was appointed as the first president of IST Austria on December 4, 2008, by the Board of Trustees of IST Austria. He is a renowned computer scientist, born in Linz (Upper Austria), with a long career abroad. His first term as IST Austria President started on September 1, 2009. His own research group at IST addresses the challenge of reducing software bugs in concurrent and embedded systems.
Dr. Georg Schneider
Dr. Georg Schneider as Managing Director of IST Austria heads the administration of IST Austria and is responsible for financial management, technical and legal matters, and human resources.
Prof. Herbert Edelsbrunner
Prof. Edelsbrunner joined IST in 2009. His research evolved from algorithms and data structures to computational geometry and computational topology. He co-founded Geomagic in April 1996, which was later bought by 3D Systems, a 3D printing company.
Herbert ist the chairman of IST Austria’s Technology Transfer Committee.
